Six on a Saturday 3rd February 2018

Thanks for joining me!

This is my first blog for six in Saturday. Looking forward to keeping a record of my highs and lows in the garden over the next few years. Unfortunately due to work commitments I will probably not be able to write a blog every weekend. Today is wet but it is not raining hard.

1. My first photo is of this Hellebores Angel Glow which I picked up at a garden centre in Oxfordshire when I was working down there at the beginning of January. I had given myself strict instructions not to buy any plants in January but I had a couple of hours to spare so went to the Root One garden centre near Wallingford. As soon as I saw this I had to have it. Pleased to say that this Garden Centre is only 10 miles from the works Southern office.

2. Picked this through up for £26.95 at a garden centre near Gateshead last week. Again I never was never a going to buy anything but had a spare 2 mins so went to a garden centre. Once I saw this the debit card had to come out. You can see a lonely Sempervivum in the corner for some sort of scale.

3. Dobbies have got a promotion on at the moment for 2 Clematises or other climbing plants in a 9cm for £9.00. With my 10% discount I get from my Dobbies card it was only £8.10 for 2. I have brought 4. Had to pot 2 up until I fix part of the fence and might grow these in the pot this year and transplant them next Autumn\Winter. Hopefully the fence will be fixed by then.

4. Another Hellebores. Bought this for £2.00 from Morrison’s and it has been a belter! Just goes to show you don’t have to spend a fortune on plants!.

5. Was brave and moved this Hydrangea last week. Decided to move it away from a price hedge so it gets more light and the soil will not get as dry. Perhaps it was a little bit to cold but I have fertilised and mulched it with manure so it should be ok. The shoots are opening up wider every day.

6. An Iris that I bought at the Royal Botanical Gardens. Was having a bad day at work and luckily the RBG Edinburgh is 2 mins from my office. Will look into buying some of these bulbs in the Autumn. Variety is Katharine Hodgkin’s.

That’s all for now. Until next Saturday.

Welcome to the blogosphere and, particularly, to the Six on Saturday gang. We seem to have a lot of people from your neck of the woods here in Wales at the moment. Having spare time, a debit card handy and anywhere that sells plants nearby is always a fatal combination for gardeners’ bank balances. And your photos show lots of space for pots and you even seem to have some of that rare species – spare earth – available. Better add your bank manager to your Christmas card list! Looking forward to your next post.

    1. No the spare Earth is going to be my Dahlia bed and got some lavender to plant into it. Going to spread some manure tomorrow Is it wrong that when work asks me to work away that the first thing I do is look where the nearest garden centre is?

Your Angel Glow hellebore has an amazing number of buds on it. I can’t tell if the trough has holes – if not, is that difficult to resolve? And will it be a succulent bed? Imagine that’d be amazing. I’ve never transplanted an hydranggea. Look forward to seeing how it does, though it appears to have a good start.

    1. Aye as I said before wasn’t going to spend any money on plants last month but when I saw this I had to have it. I bought another one on Thursday and planted at the back of the Border will take a photo tomorrow. Got to be some of the prettiest flowers I have seen especially for a late winter plant. The trough does have holes….gonna be a wee project over the next couple of months. Going to fill it with Sempervivum and Sedums. Only bought the hyderangea last year but planted it to close to the privet hedge. Will keep you posted. Thanks for your comments

Beautiful little Iris reticulata. Mine won’t bloom for a number of weeks yet. Sigh. Still, it’s good to be reminded of how lovely they will be!

    1. I may have cheated a little and bought it like that from a garden centre but rest assured I will be buying bulbs this Autumn. Thanks for your comments.
