Hello and welcome to this weeks Six on Saturday.
In these mad times weeks seem to be merging into one and I have to admit at the start of the lockdown I was worried in case I got bored a d had nothing to do, but as we all know of you have a garden there is always something to do. Thankfully this enforced gardening leave has landed in Spring in my view the best season in the garden and not in the middle of the winter as that would have been unimaginable. I am also thankful that I have a garden even it is a small one as my heart goes out to anybody that lives in a flat.
One bonus of this enforced break is that most of the country is ins the middle of high pressure coming across from Scandinavia in the Spring and Summer this brings settled warm weather and obviously if it was in the winter we would have settled colder than normal weather. The draw back of settled weather is that there is hardly any rain. As regulars readers of this blog will know I like a moan about the lack of rain we get in the east side of the UK. It must be at least 6 weeks since we have had rain but it permanent Sunday does have it’s advantages and the garden is looking good and my right arm has never been as toned with all the full watering cans I have been carrying from the front of the house to the back of the house.
Here is my six for this week which is full of tulips and the colour blue.
1. Tulip Groenland….but probably not. CBM
I mentioned last week that I had planted some tulips using the Lasagne method and I thought that it consisted of T. Groenland. It turns out I was wrong and. I had planted the Groenland in another couple of pots. As you am see this tulip is a real dazzler. The candy pink and white colours of the petals draw your eyes to a yellow centre. Bees seem to love this plant and I have seen bees going backwards and forwards all week. Groenland is a Vildoflora tulip which means that it should act as a true perennial and come back year after year. The only probes now however is I don’t have a clue what tulips I have planted I the lasagne formation as they still have not flowered.
***Disclaimer*** these Tulip might be Tulip Angelique after reading the Propagators blog. Damn my disorganised mind. Something in the depths of my mind makes me think I did by some somewhere.
2. Tulip Cairo
This is another tulip I have planted in one of the borders in the front of my house and have been there for a fair while now and seem to come back year after year. They make a great contrast with the other tulip that seems to have naturalised in the front of the house Tulip Ronaldo. I am going to plant some of this years container bulbs in the same borders in autumn and will see if they act in the same way.
3. Brunnera Jack Frost
It always lifts my spirits when this plant starts to flower. I have this planted this right up against a north facing fence and it thrives. The dainty blue flowers have a striking white centre and they look like they have been painted. You do get a double whammy for your money with this plant add it has wonderful light green and white specked leaves.
4. Omphalodes Starry Night
Again this is in a North facing aspect. This has grown a lot over the last year. It bad had some flowers over winter but in the last few weeks it has exploded with flower over the last few weeks. The flowers are wonderful and the white areas turn subtly pink after a while.
5. Primula Siedblodi.
This plant disappeared last year but has made and appearance this year. I think it is because that I have planted in a sunny dry area. This was one of the first plants that I bought when I took out garden and I never paid attentions to any of the labels. The weather forecast would have you believe it is going to be a little more cloudier and cooler over the next few days so I will move it to a more shadier area.
6. Aquilegia Salmon Rose
Has finally flowered. I have been like and expectant father for the last few weeks when the first flower stalks showed themselves. The flowers are pretty if some what smaller than K thought they were going to be but perhaps I am being a touch premature with saying that as only a couple of flowers have opened at the moment.
That is my six on Saturday.
After 4 weeks of constant gardening everyday I have decided to take a break from the garden this weekend and stand back and enjoy it from a far and notice any plants in the garden I have I have missed.

Brunnera Jack Frost is definitely on my wish list. No rain here either but garden seems to be bearing up!

It does look like Angelique doesn’t it, lovely whatever its name. Lovely brunnera. I can’t see the ompalodes, is it just me? I’ve just bought a P. sieboldii ‘Winter Dreams’, can’t wait for it to flower!

It is Angelique! Some where back in my distant mind I can remember buying it. Writing labels at the moment!!!! I have found my Groenland and they are not the ones in the lasagne pot. It’s like a continuous soap opera with my management of my spring bulbs.

In spite of having no serums, another lovely, colourful post. I am off to do a spot of right arm weight lifting with the watering can today. Some rain is forecast this week but we shall see. 🤔💦

I don’t know what the difference is between ‘Angelique’ and ‘Groenland ‘ tulips but they are very similar to my Angelique too …
What a pretty aquilegia ! The first ones arrive here too.

Yes Fred Rhett are definitely Angelique. I must have bought them last year. Damn my disorganised mind lol.

Beautiful tulips. The flowers of the Brunnera Jack Frost are just like dark blue forget-me-nots. I’ll have to look it up later.

‘Angelique’, or whatever it is, looks like roses. The color looks almost right for ‘Groenland’, but with the outer green stripes obscured by the openness of the bloom. (I know it as ‘Greenland’ here.). There are too many petals though. Because I am so bad about selecting good colors, I don’t. When I lived in town, the neighbors told me what would work. I sometimes got blooms that I was not familiar with. It was great.

They are definitely Angelique. I have located the Groenland and they are extremely interesting looking Tulips.

I think they are all pretty in other peoples’ gardens. I would not be so adventurous to try some of the frillier sorts.

The simple old fashioned tulips seem to be somewhat uncommon nowadays. Frilly is in.

Some real treasures there Paul. I too have some pictures of Cairo – I love an orange tulip. Omphaloides starry night is gorgeous. I planted one in my shady woodland area and, just like you’ve described, it’s exploded in recent weeks.

Love that tulip & may have to look for some in the autumn. Jack Frost is a fav of mine & yours is looking really good. The Starry Night plant is new to me & really eye catching. It may have to come live w/me. And Salmon Rose, another fav that I don’t have. Just thinking your garden must be spectacular w/colour at the mo.

Whatever those tulips are they are very pretty, as Tony said, almost like a rose. And I love your Aquilegia too, such a deep pink. Your garden is looking lovely right now, but even we need some rain, although there was a smidgen during the week, not enough for a good soak. Overnight rain would be welcome so I can still go outside during the day!

The Omphalodes is definitely onto the wanted list, I have O. nitida doing well and seedlings of O. linifolia coming along. Another embryonic collection maybe.

Lovely 6! I think your tulips are groenland and Angelique and they mix beautifully. No rain here either in Herts bucks borders. My heavy clay soil which was water logged until about March is now like concrete. Rain should be coming next week.

Both Brunneria and Omphalodes are just lovely, and I will try and find out if they can grow here. Both stunning blues. The tulips are beautiful as well.

Those tulips are gorgeous, whatever they are! I’ve some Angelique, but they are much paler (they’ve been in a pot for two years and I’m sure they’re lighter each year). I shall be looking out for the brunnera, it’s lovely

Lovely six. I’ve had the tiniest rain burst today but hopefully some more later. Looking forward to my aquilegia blooming. Been on the verge for days.

Was never out the garden! Just as well as the weather was warm over the weekend. There is a definite cold front today. Still no rain though hopefully we will get some during the night.
